This month the Reading Across the Pond book group read The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai. Everyone agreed that they quite liked the writer’s style, but several members of the group had problems suspending disbelief regarding some of the twists and turns that the story took. They thought novel raised interesting questions about (1) the role of librarians in promoting learning and (2) religiously motivated censorship in America, but they were not sure that the book explored these ideas as fully as it could have. We hope to have a better response to The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn next month.
