An intriguing question was just (half-seriously) posed to our enquiry desk: If you call a person who loves the people and culture of England an Anglophile and you call a person who loves the people and culture of France a Francophile, what do you call a person who loves the people and culture of America?
The answer is that there isn’t an official word for that! The Guardian posed this question recently (and received quite a few rude answers, which means we’re not going to link to their survey); as far as we can tell, the people who they polled seemed to prefer the unofficial term “Yankophile” to “Americanophile.” Interesting!
