Public History Engagement

On Friday 2nd March, UEA American Scholar Elizabeth Rawitsch and former UEA American scholar Beth Southard were in Manchester, presenting a paper on “Using Visual Images to Enhance Public History Engagment.” They discussed the “Beyond Cowboys and Indians” talk that had been held here at the Memorial Library in June 2010, which used historical photographs and movie clips to explore the shifting images and interpretations of the American West over the past century.

The talk was part of a workshop entitled “Teaching with Images and Material Culture: Innovations and Best Practice to Improve Student Learning in the Teaching of North American History.” It was fascinating to hear the perspective of other historians who teach American history on a daily basis, and we valued their feedback about how we might enhance an event like “Beyond Cowboys and Indians” if we were to run it again in the future… in fact, we’re about to run a modified version of the talk aimed at schoolchildren in a little under an hour!
