On Monday, the Reading Across the Pond book group read Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.
The unanimous opinion of the group was one of ambivalence: our memory of the last book, Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, made us too conscious of the sharp division between exceptional and ordinary writing.
However, to Gruen’s credit, we declared this book fine enough fare for light diversion. As one member put it, “…this is departure lounge reading. A reasonable way to pass 5 or 6 hours.”
Next up: Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
