Beloved American children’s book artist Maurice Sendak passed away earlier this month. He is perhaps best known as the man who encouraged timid children (and parents) to venture Where the Wild Things Are, who revealed what goes on In the Night Kitchen and who proclaimed the unsung virtues of Chicken Soup with Rice. Sendak had been awarded both the Hans Christian Andersen Medal and the Caldecott Medal.
In his honour, why not check out The Art of Maurice Sendak by Selma Lanes or The Art of Maurice Sendak : 1980 to the Present by Tony Kushner? These books contain early sketches, ideas that were never developed and penned fantasies created while listening to music. There are also accompanying personal accounts of the artist’s life.
