This morning, an article in the Eastern Daily Press announced the launch of “The Eighth in the East,” a major community project celebrating the US presence in East Anglia during the Second World War. The 2nd Air Division Memorial Library is thrilled to be a part of it!
The project has been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a six-month development phase. The award allows the project committee to fully liaise with supporters and potential partners and to properly develop its plans for a three-year project (coinciding with the 70th anniversary of American involvement in World War II) which will: record the cultural and material history of the USAAF 8th Air Force in the East of England; interpret it for local people and visitors; and raise the profile of this significant history.
The project is a cross-regional partnership involving museums from across the East of England, the Norfolk Record Office, UEA, the Second Air Division Memorial Library and a new social enterprise company from Suffolk, New Heritage Solutions.
A meeting of all interested parties will be held at the 95th Bomb Group Museum at Horham near Eye in Suffolk on Sunday, February 26 beginning at 11am.
